HELENA PREVIEW MEET
Unfortuantly we left Helena without results from the meet. I believe the boys JV team won easily with Sean Clark (1st) and Ross VanBrunt (2nd) leading the way. Just a few JV times: Sean Clark 17:17:37 Ross VanBrunt 17:40 Tyler Barth 17:52 John Fairweather 18:04 Zach Lorenz 18:07 Alex Cox ran 17:09 which is a major improvement over his previous best of 17:51. Alex is only a freshman and appears to now have a lock on our number 8 position. Caleb Ambrose was beaten for the first time by teammate Matt Parker. Caleb did have a major sideach and seemed to falter somewhat later in the race. I expect Caleb to come back even stronger at the state meet and revenge a poor race. Matt ran excellent and will be right up their with Caleb at state meet. Overall the varsity boys ran great but didn't quite have enough to beat a very good Helena High team. Doepker, Grilley, and Welder all had personal bests but will have to step it up to beat Helena at the state meet. It will come down to the all important 5th runner. Jessica Schlagenhaufer won the girls' JV race with a good time of 21:05. Jessica proves what a good summer of training will do for race performance. Lucy Beard finished 2nd in 21:32 and continues to show promise for the future. Kaimee Clark continues to improve(22:36) and finished in the top 10. We did not have enough girls (only three) to come up with a team score. The Flathead girls made a statement that they will be tough to beat at the state meet. They scored 20 points over Great Falls who had 56 points. Flathead ran without Carly Brown (#3) and Erin Windauer (#5-6) who should be ready to run at the state meet. It was fun to watch freshman Riata Booky and Elizabeth Myers run so well in varsity competition. They keep improving and will be continue to push for varsity spots. Freshman Kayla Steller may have gone out too fast and faded to 18th place but still had a PB by about 30 seconds. Zoe Nelson broke the Helena course record by 43 seconds. Her time of 16:46 will reinforce an earlier time on the new Flathead XC course of 16:43. It will be interesting to see how Zoe will do against the competition at Western Regional Footlocker. My guess is that Zoe has to be one of the favorites going into that meet.
